? History of Galleria Borghese

The villa was initially a summer and party residence of the noble Borghese family. It was constructed in the early 1600s. In the year 1605, Camillo Borghese became Pope V, and his nephew, Scipione Borghese,  was made a cardinal.  Scipione was a real art buff and thus he became the youngest Bernini’s patrons. Having a great interest in art, Scipione designed the entire villa according to his taste. Later, many works from the Galleria Borghese were purchased and others donated. About 500 world-class pieces of art were confiscated by Napoleon from this museum. You can see an assorted collection of those statues in the Louvre Museum. Finally, in 1902, the villa was sold to the Italian state by the Borghese family.
