Maldives doesn’t require pre-approval for its tourist visa to enter the Maldives. A 30-day tourist visa is issued for Indian passport holders on arrival into the Maldives. This is applicable if certain documents are produced and conditions met. We will be taking a look at what they are shortly.

Once the requirements are met at zero cost, a 30-day tourist visa is issued to Indian passport holders. The Maldives tourist visa is free for Indian passport holders for most intents and purposes. However, If you plan on extending your stay. A nominal fee of around INR 3,500 is to be paid and the Maldives visa for Indians can be extended up to 90 days.

Conditions for Maldives visa on arrival for Indian passport holders:

  1. All Indian travellers need to carry a valid Indian passport with a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of travel.
  2. Produced a return air ticket at Maldives immigration counter as proof of return.
  3. Adequate funds to cover all expenses for the duration of the stay. The minimum is considered to be 100 USD plus 50 USD per person per night. So if you are planning a 4 night trip as a couple you will need to carry a minimum of 600 USD. 
  4. Produced a hotel or resort booking confirmation for the dates of travel as the proof of stay.
  5. Recently taken passport-sized photos of the travellers with a white background. The photos need to match the photo in the passport.

If all these conditions are met, you will be issued a 30-day Maldives tourist visa at zero charges.

List of Maldives visa for tourists

The Maldives provides travellers with a variety of visas, including:

  • Tourist visa: This visa can be extended for an additional 30 days after it has been initially issued for a maximum of 30 days. It is designed for vacationers and leisure travellers to the Maldives.
  • Business visa: This visa is available to visitors coming to the Maldives on business for up to 60 days in order to attend meetings, conferences, or other business-related events.
  • Work visa: This visa, which is only available to visitors who want to work in the Maldives, is only provided for a maximum of 12 months.

What are the chances of being denied for the Maldives visa for Indians?

The issuance of a 30-day tourist visa is not a right of the traveller. The Maldives department of immigration serves the right to deny entry in the following cases.

If,

  • required documents aren’t produced and conditions not met. 
  • the immigration officer finds reasonable evidence that documents are falsified
  • the immigration officer suspects a persons intention to disrupt harmony or indulge in illegal activities in the country.
  • the individual is found to be antisemitic, disrupting religious/political harmony.

Documents Required to Obtain Maldives Visa on Arrival for Indians

  1. Please ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months or possess a travel document with a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ). However, please be aware that Maldives Immigration does not permit passengers with passports showing extended validity.
  2. For Indian tourists traveling to Maldives with children or minors, it is important that each child has their own passport.
  3. You must have a confirmed return ticket or an onward journey ticket.
  4. Have a prepaid and confirmed hotel booking at a registered hotel for the entire duration of your stay.
  5. You must provide proof of sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay.
  6. Make sure you have a valid visa and passport for your onward journey to your next destination.
  7. All travelers to Maldives are obligated to submit a Travel Declaration form within 96 hours prior to the flight departure time. You can download this form from the official website of Maldives Immigration.

How can I extend my Maldives visa?

If you wish to extend the tourist visa, you can do so by filling up the visa extension application form at the Immigration head office during its work hours in the capital city of Male.

Extension will be considered after immigration reassesses the financial position of the applicant for the revised duration of stay. If an extension is considered, it will be provided for a maximum of 90 days including the number of days of initial stay and a fee of 750 Maldives Rufiyaa will be charged for the same. The fee is only applicable for tourist visas that are issued for more than 30 days of stay.
