Portugal Reopens To US Travelers – Find Out Everything You Need To Know To Visit Portugal

Covid-19 has been a nightmare to all of us. A year of being locked in our homes with a big NO to travel is definitely a disappointment. But, change is the only constant, right? Having said that, 2021 seems to bring in the much-needed travel change which we have been waiting for. As we all know, countries such as Italy, Greece, Maldives, Croatia, and a few have already opened their borders to US travelers and we do have another country that has recently opened its border to vibe up your summer vacation mode! Yes, It’s Portugal! After almost 15 months, Portugal reopens to US travelers and has become one of the latest European countries to open its borders.

When was the official announcement made?

The official announcement was made on June 15, Tuesday by the US Embassy & Consulate in Portugal. They have announced that nonessential travelers from the US will be allowed to enter the borders of Portugal which clearly states that tourism is all open.

Requirements to travel to Portugal from the US

Even though Portugal reopens to US travelers, there are a few requirements that are to be followed.

  • Travelers who are 2 years and older must provide proof of a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), such as a PCR test taken within 72 hours before boarding.
  • If not taken a PCR Test within 72 hours, one can go for a rapid test which should be taken within 24 hours before boarding the flight.
  • Travelers entering Portugal must complete the electronic Passenger Locator Card within 48 hours of traveling to Portugal.

However, kindly note that the current measure is in place until June 27 and the rule will be revisited and renewed after every two weeks.

Specific requirements for Madeira and Azores

Madeira and Azores being autonomous regions, they have their own requirements for US travelers. So, if you are looking forward to traveling to these places, make sure you make a note of the specific requirements.

Madeira

  • Travelers arriving directly to Madeira must either provide a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to the departure or provide proof of vaccination.
  • Travelers entering Madeira must complete a health questionnaire between 48 and 12 hours prior to their departure.

Azores

  • Travelers aged 12 and older who are directly flying from the US or taking a domestic flight outside the Azores must take a test upon arrival and remain isolated until the results are known or must provide a covid negative report which is taken within 72 hours prior to the departure.
  • Tourists who remain in the Azores for more than seven days are required to get tested again on their 6th day.
  • Travelers entering the Azores must complete a health questionnaire between 48 and 12 hours prior to their departure.

  • Failing to present a COVID-19 test at the airport upon arrival in Portugal results in a fine from 300 euros to 800 euros.
  • Restaurants and cafes can operate until midnight with a maximum of 6 people inside or 10 people on the terrace.
  • Cultural events are open to the public till midnight with a few seating restrictions.
  • Alcoholic beverages can be sold only till 8:00 PM.
  • Be it beaches or any other public area, tourists are required to wear masks and to maintain social distancing.
  • Visitors must maintain a distance of 1.5 m between their towels at the beaches.
