Whether you are at a private island or a public island, walking across the island is a great and economical experience to have. There are many options to travel from one island to another in the Maldives. Check out and select one of the following conveyances depending on your budget and time duration. Also, do remember that sea and air transfers are closed about an hour before the sunset.

1. Seaplanes

The popular and fastest mode of transportation in the Maldives for island hopping is via seaplanes. These are also known as the ‘air taxi’ and a perfect way to commute between the islands. Enjoy breathtaking bird-eye views as you travel long distances in no time. Seaplanes can manage up to 18 people at a time while costing an average price between USD 200 and USD 500 (depending on the distance). TransMaldivian is the prominent seaplanes service provider in the country. To have a hassle-free experience, book your seaplane ride online in advance. If you wish to carry extra luggage, you might need to pay some extra bucks.

2. Speedboats

Speedboats are another great option to commute between the islands. Motor-driven speedboat is the luxurious and fastest way to explore the Maldivian islands. Private speed boats are mostly used by the resorts, whereas public speedboats do not have a fixed schedule and are operated the whole day before sunset. Public speedboat carries about 20 to 30 people at a time and costs about a minimum of USD 20 whereas private speed boats cost a lot more.

3. Public Boats – Dhoni

Dhonis are also a good option to commute between destinations and are easy on pockets. These traditional boats are very popular in the country and are widely used by the tourists and locals for transportation due to their nominal prices. The maximum price can go up to USD 10 and the boat accommodates about 50 to 100 people at a time. The boats are operated every day before sunset except on Fridays. These are a perfect mode of transportation, but slow and time-consuming. Book your seat in advance or get knowledge about the schedule by visiting its online website.
