Two Oceans Aquarium is a major attraction on the classic victoria and Alfred Waterfront in the Cape Town city. The aquarium is named after its very location, where the Atlantic ocean on the west and the Indian Ocean on the east join hands with each other at the shore. Inaugurated in November 1995, The attraction has some breathtaking underwater experiences which are ideal and suitable for family tours at the Cape Town Waterfront.

History of Two Oceans Aquarium, Cape Town

The Two Oceans Aquarium opened its doors to the tourists and locals on 13th November 1995. Since then, The aquarium has gone through many changes. It has now become a top and sought after attraction in Cape Town and it is also now one of the world-class marine education and conservation centre. Established with the passion for the underwater and marine life, This famous aquarium is known for its contribution to conservation ventures, animal husbandry, and the ultra-modern educational projects.

The Attractions in the Aquarium

The Two Oceans Aquarium is a habitat for thousands of marine life, a part of more than 200 different underwater creatures, one can get a glimpse of them all through interactive exhibits. There are 7 – 8 particular displays at the Two Oceans Aquarium, each of which is devoted to the conservation and preservation of the most distinctive marine animals, not just of the South African coast but from around the world as well. The Atlantic ocean galley at the aquarium is home for translucent jellyfishes, the rare seahorse Knysna and giant spider crabs, while the well-known predator display is to marvel at some of the sea’s most dangerous creatures. One can have a look at 3 ragged toothed sharks that reside here swimming around 2 million litres of salt water. 

The Aquarium also offers some bit of adventure to its visitors, wherein they can dive in the I&J Ocean exhibit tank, which has a variety of marine animals spread across 1.6 million litres of salt water, like turtles, stingrays and a variety of fish. Some of the new entries like the African penguins, oystercatchers, mole snakes, leopard toads, platannas and a river course of freshwater marines can be spotted in the latest exhibit that has been opened here called the River Meander.
