History of Ayutthaya

King Uthong, a Chinese merchant, moved his court from U-Thong to avoid the plague and founded Ayutthaya in 1350 AD. The name of this city is inspired by Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama, the hero of the Hindu epic Ramayana. Because of conquest, expansion, and trade, this beautiful city grew in size and economic influence, soon surpassing the power of the ancient capitals of the Kingdom of Thailand. Ayutthaya was soon declared the new capital by King U-Thong (aka Ramathibodi I) before his death in 1369. The Burmese army attacked and burned the city to the ground in 1767 AD. After Ayutthaya was destroyed, the capital was relocated to Bangkok, and efforts were made to recreate the city's urban design and architectural style. In Thai, Bangkok's official name remains "Ayutthaya" as part of its official name.
