Covid restrictions

Entry for vaccinated travellers in Mauritius is allowed and all you need is a verified certificate. From 1 October 2021, all the vaccinated guests can explore the island without any problems. Mauritius has opened its borders for travellers with strict protocols, rules and restrictions. Some domestic restrictions are being lifted and vaccinated guests are welcomed. You can also choose where to stay according to their choices. It is mandatory to arrange COVID-19 insurance health cover for all travellers. You must present a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours from your last point of embarkation if not vaccinated.

  • Tourist Entry: Allowed
  • Testing: Every tourist from any country requires a Negative COVID-19 test report.
  • Quarantine Required: Yes
  • Quarantine Details: Every tourist from any country must self-quarantine themselves for 14 days.

Lockdown Details

  • COVID-19 restrictions eased on 1 October 2021 in Mauritius.
  • Social distancing and wearing face masks in public is mandatory.
  • Public transport is operating.
  • Access to beaches is allowed.
  • Restaurants, bars, cinemas and shops are operating, and you can easily visit but nightclubs remain closed.
  • Casinos and fitness centres are open to fully vaccinated people only (18+).
  • The restriction on numbers at social gatherings (marriage, religious events and so on) is 100 people.

Things not to do in Mauritius

1. Do not smoke in public

Smoking in public is not allowed in Mauritius, so try not to break the law. If you break the law then you will have to pay a hefty fine.

2. Do not hike without a guide

Mauritius is known for hiking and treks but does not hike without a guide. The forests are thick and dense and very easy to get lost in. It is better to have a guide with you and not to get lost.

3. Avoid using public washrooms

Public washrooms in Mauritius are sometimes very dirty and won’t be happy seeing it. Also, you don’t want to get any diseases by using dirty washrooms. It is better to use your hotel washrooms. Also, do remember that here washrooms are Asian style which requires you to squat.

4. Do not drive on the right

One thing that you have to be careful about is that people in Mauritius drive on the left side. So, if you are planning to rent a car for driving in Mauritius, keep this in mind.

5. Don’t trust Google maps blindly

While you are in Mauritius you should not rely on Google maps only. The reason behind this is that the Google maps are not optimized for the locations of Mauritius. It is also possible that you might end up in the wrong place. It is better to consult locals and go on your way.
