Morne Seychellois National Park

Covering roughly 3045 hectares, Morne Seychellois National Park is said to be the largest park and the highest peak in Seychelles. It is gracefully located in the midst of picturesque landscapes on the island of Mahe. Surrounded by a dense forest, the only way you can approach the park is by walking trails. This large national park seems to cover almost 20% of the entire island.

History of Morne Seychellois National Park

Before Seychelles got its independence, it was completely under the rule of British and French. This archipelago of various islands became independent in 1976 and the park was created in the year 1979. Earlier, the place has traded Timber and spices reserve but the government has become strict with its policies to preserve what’s left.

Flora and fauna in the Park

Entering 600 m right into the park, you will be greeted with a beautiful green forest. You can find various rare spices, tea plantation and many more. Some of the endemic plants it has, include Nepenthes pervillei, Phoenicophorium, and Medusagyne. One of the interesting facts about the park is that it has pitcher plant which eats the insects that sit on them. Apart from these, there are some native birds that one can spot which include Seychelles kestrels, blue pigeons, scops owls, swiftlets, bulbuls, white-eyes, and sunbirds.

1. Copolia Peak

The peak is 500 metres up above the clouds, which would take almost 5 hours to complete the trek up and down. The breathtaking view that you would get after reaching the top will be worth it. While you visit Mahe, don’t miss standing on this peak with a forest at your back and an entire city on your front.

2. Anse Major

Apart from just the trekking, you also can have a peaceful time in the Anse Major Beach. Earlier, this was a place where fruits cultivation happened has now turned into an aesthetic beach.

3. SeyTe Tea Factory

SeyTe Tea Factory located in the park serves the best tea from the leaves that are freshly picked. You can also take tours to know more about the process of how they work. This place is a must for all the tea lovers out there!

How to reach the park

Sans Souci road is the only road that you can take to reach the park. For people making their way from downtown Victoria which is 10 km away, can take bus number 14 which will take you to the entrance. If you wish to self-drive, you can hire a car.
