How to Apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

Here are a few simple steps for you to apply for your International Driving Permit (IDP) in India.

Step – 1: Check if you are eligible for the permit. You have to be at least 18 years old and already have an Indian driver’s license that can be a permanent or provisional license.

Step – 2: Gather all the required documents to apply for the permit. Make sure to double-check to avoid any mishaps.

Step – 3: You have the choice of both online and offline applications. Visit the RTO website of your region and fill out the application or get an application from the RTO office.

Step – 4: Check and submit the application along with the necessary documents through the online portal or visit in person and submit the physical copies.

Step – 5: Pay the application fees for it to get processed, which is usually around Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500.

Step – 6: It takes some time for verification, which is typically done in 1–3 business days. You might have to pick it up at the RTO, or it will be mailed to your address.

Once you receive your IDP, check if the validity and other details are error-free. You will be allowed to drive in various countries that accept IDP, not just Japan. It is just a translation of your driving license, so it should always be accompanied by it. Carry both your Indian driving license and international driving permit while you drive in Japan.
